Film night with VMCC March 2015

Film Show

March clubnight was packed, setting a new attendance record and needing several extra chairs. There were also several new members at the meeting, the main activity being the presentation of awards. First, though, Maurice reviewed recent activities, reporting that four members had attended the funeral of our friend, John Lay, in Colchester. He then outlined the summer programme of events, just published. Inevitably details of two of the plans immediately had to be altered–one because the pub, venue for the finish of one of the evening runs, was reported to be closed at the moment. That was easily solved by substituting another pub. The other change was that September’s Henham Steam Fair, to which we traditionally have a pleasant run along with the day out, has been moved from Henham Park, near Southwold, to the Suffolk Showground on the outskirts of Ipswich. This will now hardly merit an organised run for attendance and will leave September without a major run. Albert suggested a run on the weekend before, possibly to the Colne Valley Railway at Castle Hedingham in Essex, but it was decided to review any plans for a replacement run nearer the time.

Secondly, he reported on a meeting he had attended, at which an Ipswich Council representative is beginning to organise a display in July on the Ipswich waterfront, of all sorts of vehicles, ranging from bikes to buses and commercial vehicles. Two issues emerged—firstly that the date clashes with the VMCC’s Founder’s Day, to which many of our members go and secondly, that owners of classic motorcycles are likely to be less happy than other classic enthusiasts to be leaving a bike all day in the centre of town from 9 am to 6 pm, probably unattended for most of the time. The Chairman of the VMCC was also there and so will keep us informed of progress on the plan.

With the business out of the way, presentation of the awards followed. The first one on the list was the Club member of the year award. With all the votes in, the top members’ choice was Jim Lomax and    Chairman Albert presented the cup with his congratulations.  He next announced that he was awarding the Chairman’s Cup to Dave Cook, who has for years organised and led many of the Section’s runs whilst also quietly keeping up to date the Section’s details on the website of the main Club. He   thanked him for his contribution. Richard was the winner of the Christmas Quiz and was presented with the Quiz cup. Brian had won the Memorial Shield at the Copdock Show, but was not there at the meeting to be congratulated and there was, happily, no candidate this year for the Catastrophe Award. Finally, Albert surprised Richard by presenting him with a bottle of wine in appreciation of his work over the past years as Secretary.
