Technical Tip (4): Case hardening cheaply

This month’s handy tip
If you are making something in your workshop that needs to have a hardened surface, case-hardening it can easily be done without the special professional compound. Ordinary granulated sugar will do the job perfectly.
Simply heat up the part you want hardened until it’s cherry-red, then dip it in the sugar and allow the carbon in the sugar to soak into the material whilst it’s red, then quench.
