East Suffolk Section

Section Notes 27th February 2015

27th  Feb 2015

January’s pub lunch was at the Railway, at Westerfield, convivial as always and a good choice to bear in mind for the winter months when the weather can make access to more outlying pubs difficult. At the end of the month we got the shock news of the sudden death of John Lay, secretary of the North Essex section and also an East Suffolk member for many years. John was a big personality, and whenever we’ve been with the North Essex lads, there’s always been a good laugh, usually with John at the heart of it. We remember having to replenish his CS single at the roadside on the return trip from North Weald a few years ago, contributing from our machines and, just when the tiny tank again ran dry, the miraculous appearance of a man with a petrol can!  John certainly will be missed by all.  His funeral is to be on March 9th at Colchester and our section will be represented.
There was a huge gathering of 50 or more at February’s clubnight at the Golf club when the local VMCC members once more joined us for the evening for a showing of motorcycling films. Albert had assembled another selection of films covering a wide range of motorcycle interest, from ice racing to oil technology. Many of our members took the opportunity to pay their annual subs and we welcomed a new member, Peter Ling, who already knows several members of the Section and is in the process of finding a 350 single to enjoy over the summer.
The next meeting in March will be the Awards night, so a reminder here that if you want your vote for Club member of the Year to count, make sure Maurice has your voting slip. We have details of a new event, still in the planning stage, which will be a gathering in July of vintage vehicles on the Ipswich waterfront. Maurice and Albert expect to know more by the next meeting. Another coming development is a camping weekend, to be run by the Ipswich VMCC at the late Dave Bickers home farm in Coddenham in August. Day visitors will be welcomed and it may be attractive to those of our members who can link it in with attendance at the Jampot Rally at North Weald the following weekend –brownie points permitting, of course!
