Maurice P’s 1953 Matchless 500cc G80S

Maurice's G80SIf young men remember their first bike or car amongst other things then it’s reasonable for born again “young” men to again remember their first bike. Well here it is in all its glory. We have been together now for more than 11 years, well apart from when a lady motorist forced us to part, and I look forward to many more.

It is what it is , a solid 500 single finished in the finest shade of Hammerite Black, or is it?  Could it actually be the key to a lesser known AMC Management cock up of the early 1950’s. In the wake of the Korea War patriotism and protectionism were rife in the US and the import of totally British Bikes was banned. Hence the AMC Brainwave, import 100 pairs of Woodhead Monro rear suspension units from the US, modify the bottom yokes, fit them on G80’s and exported them to the US as part American Manufacture. Like most AMC brainwaves it did not work and so the machines were released to the British Market in 1953.

So is it a standard 500 single or a rare machine? It matters not, its mine and I just love it.
