John F’s 1956 Matchless G80 single

This machine was purchased from the AJS & Matchless Owners Club at Kettering in 2011.  It soon revealed a  timing problem, which turned out to be the advance and retard mechanism slipping.  Unfortunately the discovery took place some way from home and involved John in some unscheduled exercise as he had to push the bike all the way back home.  The spanners soon came out and  after some tightening and retiming the issue was resolved in time for the next problem!  The front wheel bearings were in poor condition and could not be adjusted to give the right amount of play so John’s wallet was given an airing and the club spares scheme provided a new bearing cassette that did the job.

One of the high points for John was the discovery of a very large amount of “history” with the bike, including lots of period adverts and old sales receipts, including many from the ’60s and ’70s.

The engine is a bit unusual in that it still wears its original wire wound piston.DSCF1029
